2009 Eliminating Disparities in Lupus through Education and Training for Health Professionals (EDLET/HP)

The purpose of this funding opportunity is to improve early diagnosis, treatment, and management of lupus for populations who are disproportionately affected by race, ethnicity and gender. This purpose will be accomplished by:

  1. Forming a consortium to help guide and inform the achievement of overall purpose and goals of EDLET/HP.
  2. Working collaboratively with medical school leaders to expand school curricula to include more comprehensive coverage of lupus.
  3. Developing, testing, and disseminating tools and curricula for improving knowledge and practices to health care professionals.

Achieving the purpose of EDLET/HP will require the applicant organization to develop, test, and deliver the curriculum in a variety of settings (e.g., medical professional meetings, on-line, webinar, and satellite). Physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses and other health care professionals will be targeted to receive this curriculum. Applicant organization will also be expected to work collaboratively with recommended entities to achieve these priorities.

Target Identification in Lupus

The Alliance for Lupus Research (ALR) is pleased to announce that the applications for the ALR’s Target Identification in Lupus (TIL) grants are now available online. Access the site directly at https://proposalcentral.altum.com.

Associated deadline dates are as follows:
Letter of Intent due date: May 20, 2009
Grant Applications due date: July 30, 2009

Investigators seeking to submit grants applications will be eligible to receive a 2-year award for up to $500,000 with an opportunity to apply for continued funding.

The ALR funds research that will accelerate the development of new treatments of lupus. As such, grant proposals should be innovative in direction and utilize state-of-the-art techniques. Fundamental studies in genetics, immunology, cell biology and molecular biology to identify and characterize molecular systems must be oriented towards the development of drugs that would prevent and/or ameliorate clinical signs and symptoms of lupus.

Building Healthy Communities: Engaging Elementary Schools and Community Partners

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan is currently accepting grant proposals from Michigan elementary schools and their community partners who are committed to taking a comprehensive approach to improving physical activity and nutrition for children and those who influence them. Grant-funding and collaboration initiatives for 2009 and 2010 focus on two key areas:

  • Combating childhood obesity by improving physical activity and nutrition among children
  • Stabilizing and expanding access to health care services for the uninsured

By targeting critical public health issues, such as childhood obesity, Blue Cross believes the overall health of Michigan residents can be significantly improved.

Integrating Colorectal Cancer Screening Programs with Other Chronic Disease Programs

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Division of Cancer Prevention and Control, is pleased to announce a funding opportunity for state, tribal, and territorial health agencies.

The purpose of this funding program is to establish and integrate evidence-based colorectal cancer screening programs with existing CRC screening programs and/or other cancer screening or chronic disease programs, in order to increase population-based CRC screenings.

Each year, the program awards 24 to 48 months grants of up to $335,000 to fund approximately 10 new research projects that have national policy relevance.

These funding opportunities run parallel and are intended to prevent growing epidemic of childhood obesity. The programs are designed to promote collaboration, coordination and exchange of scientific information among institutions, and partnerships with local, state and national agencies. Some experts predict that a continuing childhood obesity epidemic may reverse the steady increases in life expectancy substantially because of possible increases in obesity-related cardiovascular deaths.The ultimate goal is to improve children’s health by preventing obesity-related morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular and other chronic diseases.

This funding opportunity is intended to support projects to reduce women's health disparities. Health disparities refer to gaps in the quality of health and health care across racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups. In the United States, studies have shown that health disparities have been experienced by African Americans, Native Americans, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, Latinos, isolated rural women and populations of lower socioeconomic status. Health disparities may have an impact on quality of life and mortality; quality and appropriateness of health care; the prevalence of certain health conditions or diseases, and in health outcomes.
